Pismenost žensk v srednjem veku je bila presenetljivo visoka. Nune so bile pisateljice in pisarke. Mnoge druge ženske so spodbujale branje in učenje, zlasti plemiške. En primer je bila Christine de Pizan, pesnica na dvoru francoskega kralja Charlesa VI.
