A nők írástudása a középkorban meglepően magas volt. Az apácák írók és írástudók voltak. Sok más nő bátorította az olvasást és a tanulást, különösen a nemes nők. Példa erre Christine de Pizan, VI. Károly francia király udvarának költője.
