The poet Theocritus flourished in the 3rd century BC. Born in Sicily, probably in Syracuse, he may have lived in Egypt for a time. He created Ancient Greek Bucolic Poetry, i.e. poems with a pastoral theme. He is best known for his Idylls some of which, however, are of doubtful authenticity.
