Before the war, the Delplace-Ignaes family (grandparents of Ghislain Cornette) had a shop in Vlamertinge. The shop was run by his mother Robertine and aunt Beatrice. The shop also sold bread by his uncle Auguste. On Thursday, March 23, 1915, between 07:30 and 08:30, the store was destroyed by a shell impact. Two were killed and several injured.
