Romansque Enthroned Madonna
This Romansque statue, of the Enthroned Madonna, shows Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God), or Sedes Sapientia (the Seat of Wisdom). Such works usually show the Christ child on Mary's knee, his absence is highlighted by the fixing dowels in Mary's lap which would have secured him there. This limewood carved statue is German (Lower Rhine) and early 12th century.
