Portrait of a lady (Veronica Gambara?)
This is a rare example of a portrait of a woman featuring Greek. The bowl held by the sitter shows a partial quotation from Homer (Od. 4. 220-21). It refers to the medicine that 'banishes pain and sorrow' and 'calms anger' 'of all'. The inscription is consistent with the woman's plausible widowhood and cultural interests.
