Грамотността на жените през Средновековието е била изненадващо висока. Монахините са били автори и писари. Много други жени насърчаваха четенето и ученето, особено благородните жени. Един пример е Кристин дьо Пизан, поетеса от двора на френския крал Шарл VI.
