The archaeological looting and illicit trafficking of cultural goods
The plundering of artistic works during wartime and the sharing of loot has long been a subject of numerous artistic representations. Less conspicuous but equally well-documented is the looting of tombs. In contemporary times, the theft of paintings, sometimes famous ones, has emerged, followed by the development of large-scale archaeological looting. Efforts to combat this plundering and the illicit trafficking of cultural goods have been organized over the years to protect our heritage.
